Hallo 🙋♂️
Almost 20 years ago, some demosceners and I got together, and we had the idea to build a chiptune archive. We got a lot of support from the demoscene and our IRC channel at the time: #coders.ger. We were also supported at the time by the website back2roots.org (Wayback Machine @ archive.org). We got more and more support and more and more tracks sent to us. But when I left the demoscene in 2004, and we were all more and more busy with our real lives, the archive was discontinued shortly after.
Only one snapshot of this archive exists. And this one is from 2005-02-05. This version of the archive was backed up by someone and got to archive.org in 2012. And now this archive has found a new home again, on scene.org.
melcom's ChipTune Archive (2005-02-05) has the following content:
- More than 2k classic adlib modules
- More than 4.2k classic chiptune modules
- More than 1.7k classic ym modules
💾 Download:

I recommend the following player to listen to the tracks: XMPlay. You also need different plugins to really listen to all modules from the Chiptune Archive (which you can find on the XMPlayer page). If you have trouble finding a plugin, write me personally, and I'll offer you my plugin collection for download, or I'll help you find the right plugins.
I thank menace for offering my Chiptune Archive now on Scene.org. Thanks man!
Regards,
melcom
this may be the only compilation archive where modules from twn and viems can be found, wich for some reason they still listed as "unknown" artists even in exotica, modarchive etc, btw even if this is an old compilation it still having a lot of artists to explore, it may be really helpful to discover new artists from the oldschool scene, I really wish that this compilation would have continued updating, mod,xm,it,s3m chiptunes have its own escense, they are not like the typical "chiptune 8 bit retro music" that you find in the mainstream, I personally have been making my own collection of artists who compose chip music in modules, from all my years listening to the scene music, is really dificult to find this kind of music, is real underground music, but the scene will be always alive as we keep preserving and enjoying it!
ReplyDeleteHey @heavenly makarov zeitshi
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate your comment—it means a lot to me! 😊 It's always great to see people recognizing the significance of the archive and the unique essence of chip music in module formats.
Back in 2004, I left the demoscene, and it wasn't until a decade later that I returned. During that time, a lot had changed, and unfortunately, none of the original team that had maintained "melcom's ChipTune Archive" were still around. They had moved on, dedicating themselves to their personal lives and families.
When I came back in 2014, I discovered that the archive had been shut down, and to make matters worse, I had experienced an HDD crash during my time away. As a result, I lost many modules—and this archive as well. Honestly, it’s almost a miracle that someone out there had safeguarded the collection and uploaded it to Archive.org. I am incredibly grateful to that person!
Seizing the opportunity, I immediately uploaded the archive to Scene.org exactly as it had been preserved on Archive.org. So, in a way, "melcom's ChipTune Archive" has a small happy ending. 😊
Unfortunately, life keeps me busy these days, and I don’t have the time to maintain or update the archive further. But knowing that people like you still find value in it truly makes me happy.
Thanks again for your thoughtful comment. Visitors sharing their thoughts on my site isn’t always common—so I truly appreciate it!
Best regards,
melcom
